Strandeiland
Amsterdam, Noord-Holland
2023
On the new sandbanks of Strandeiland, housing and landscape are conceived as one system.
Built volumes are lifted slightly from the ground, allowing wildlife to pass freely and weaving ecological continuity through the urban fabric.
Soft boundaries define the district: facades that grow and host vegetation, water collected on roofs and returned to the site, and gradual transitions between built and unbuilt ground. The architecture serves as an extension of the island’s ecosystem, shaping a resilient environment for both humans and non-humans.
The urban blocks are porous and open, creating generous outdoor spaces and conditions for collective life. Sand, wind, and water remain tangible elements in daily experience, grounding the neighborhood in its coastal setting.
