Werkstatt moves between the many scales and layers of architecture. Today’s challenges—climate, care, and the way we live together—are too complex to be addressed from a single perspective. We therefore approach design broadly, often feeling like sociologists, engineers, philosophers, and artists at once. Architecture, for us, is never only a spatial answer, but also a cultural and social gesture towards society and the future.

Our practice rests on three foundations. First, reclaiming abundance: we believe in reusing what already exists, in giving new life to buildings, spaces, and materials that carry history and value. Secondly living together: we design collective forms of housing and urbanism that strengthen care, sharing, and diversity, creating resilient communities. And finally material landscapes: our architecture is derived out of its material, the site, and its inherint ecology. Wood, brick, hemp-lime, or stone are not applied as an afterthought, but form the very core of the design.

Our approach is deliberately low tech. We design with sketches, models, and tangible materials, because making is a way of thinking. We look for simple and robust solutions that perform naturally, endure in time, and celebrate their own beauty. Often this means bio-based building, sometimes the timeless richness of brick. At the same time, we invest in precise digital processes to give clarity, speed, and reliability—essential qualities when working on larger and more complex projects on the urban scale.

Above all, we believe architecture must contribute with care and responsibility to the world we share. This requires collaboration and open communication with our clients, for only together can we make a lasting difference.
