Body Building

Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant

2023

A multifunctional building on the former NRE-terrain realized together with its future users.

Studios, workshops, a language school, and three dwellings are arranged in a cross laminated timber structure. The walls are made of lime-hemp blocks, forming a breathable shell that stores over 200 tonnes of COâ‚‚.

The facade is sculpted by hand and feet, reflecting the significance of the human body. The design draws inspiration from the appearance of scaffolding structures wrapped in white plastic foil, aiming to resemble the human body's skin stretched over its skeleton.

Openings and voids connect interior spaces to a roof garden that collects rainwater and serves as a shared space for residents. Private and collective, solid and porous, permanent and adaptable coexist in measured balance.
